Not a Fan: Week 2 Slavery and Lordship

Welcome to Deep in The Week - Week 2 of the Not a Fan Series
Lying in my bed, I feel the damp night air rolling through the window, falling off the headboard and splashing onto my shoulders. In response, I breathe in the fresh moist air letting it seep down into my lungs. For it is not the night air I envision filling me in this moment, it is the very breathe of God. I've prayed for God to remove this everlasting desire to fill my lungs with something other than the night air. For years I was wrong, it is not the nicotine or the THC that will free me from this nightmare of brokenness. I am powerless over my addictions.

No.

It is His LOVE for me that frees me. His ever present and faithful LOVE. (see Psalm139, click here)

Despite the strength that these addictions used to have over me, they are but now no more powerful than that “wimpy kid on the beach”. For now, I know the truth about who I am and I shall kick sand in the face of those old addictions. As I breathe deep in His Glory and I begin move on down the shore. It is the very breathe of God that gives me strength to stand in the midst of these addictions and do something that I, for 10 years, have failed to do on my own. While I can still feel the weakness of the flesh as it comes under attack I do marvel at how far my spirit has come. Just four short years ago, it was the flesh who had the advantage and who was always intimidating the spirit with fear and lies.

But no more.

Nope. Things are not like they used to be.

Not since I gave it all to Jesus. My life, my mind, my soul. All of it .

Ha! Since then it has been one crazy ride for sure. Life with Christ has not been very boring, there aren’t any harps and or clouds for me, thanks. He is constantly challenging me and working out the kinks in me. I have faced an entire lifetime of struggle in half of the life I have lived. That's what living in sin will do to ya. However, He takes those experiences and does something with them. He teaches me how to use them for strength, for confidence, and for His Glory. See, these sins, these mistakes, these stains of my life, that have broken me, these stains in my life that have shattered my life into pieces........well, they are now, the center piece of a beautiful mosaic. Something I am now not afraid to share with another. These things, in the Hands of the Christ are being used to take those broken pieces and reassemble them into something more beautiful than before.

Whoa. That is just awesome. I shudder at the thought. Thank you Jesus!
What was meant to harm me and those around me, those in my circle, is now becoming a tool that will be used to save someone else. My story. MY STORY!!!!!

What? Me? Nah, I'm not special. I'm just like you. That is the key thing here. Don't miss the point of this.

You have a story too! God can and will use your story too!

For all have fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). ALL. You. Me. Yes, even the Jones’ next door. ALL OF US.

The question is though….Do you want to share your story?

No? It’s too bad? It’s too embarrassing?

Look------------------------------------------------------>

What about the longing you feel? That longing for freedom that always seems just out of reach.

It is real. It is possible. You can come back from what you have done. You are not your behavior.

No one, in the family of God will mock you. We all have a story that is unique to who we are. We are all embarrassed as to what we have done.

Look at the guy who wrote 13 of the 27 books in the New Testament. He wrote ½ of the new testament! Do you know what he did before coming to Christ?

He was a murderer. Not just a murder mind you. He targeted people who believed in Jesus. He murdered Christ followers! His name was Paul and God overlooked all of that and put on this man the responsibility to get the story of Jesus out to all the nations. So tell me. Who have you killed? How bad can it be? Do you seriously thing that God can't use you?

There is a huge release of knowing that all the junk from the past can actually be of some good. It is so hard to put into words. The freedom of knowing that you don’t have to live like that anymore is incredible. Does that interest you? You have a story worth sharing.

You have value. You have purpose.

How would it make you feel to know that it doesn't ways have to feel like this? Are you hurting? Maybe your angry? Maybe you have been both for so long that your just kinda numb? Numb like I just got back from the dentist and he gave me Novocain numb.  Except it is your heart that is numb, not your face.

Do you want to feel joy again? It is a sweet release! Man there is no better high than to realize that you don't have to live like that ever again! You can be free. Right here. Right now. You can be free.

All you have to do is believe.  Check out these verses.

John 1:12-13 NIV
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Acts 16:30-31 NIV
He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”

Romans 10:9-11
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.

To claim your freedom, to be set free all you must do is profess your belief in Jesus. Just confess that yes, you have fallen short of the mark and that you need help. Confess your belief that Jesus came in the flesh, was crucified for your sins, buried and then raised again. If that is what you believe then you are ready to pray to God. There are no 'magic words' to become a Christian.  Remember -- praying is simply talking to God, not just saying words.  Also know that simply saying these words does not save you either. It is through true believing that you are saved. As we are learning in our current study believing is the first step. Following comes next.

To accept Jesus Christ as your Savior say this simple prayer to Him:

Lord Jesus,

I am a sinner. But I believe that you died upon the cross for me. That you shed your precious blood, for the forgiveness of my sin. And I believe that on the third day you rose into heaven to
prepare a place for me. I accept you now as my Savior, my Lord, my God, my friend. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and set me free from my sin. And, because you are my Savior, Jesus, I “shall not die, but have everlasting  life”.

Thank you Jesus!

If you just prayed that prayer, I want to be the first to welcome YOU to the family! You are now a son or daughter of Christ and YOU now have an extended family who loves you for who you are! If you prayed that prayer let us know so we can support you in your next steps. Click here to contact us

God loves you. He is so patient and affirming in that love too. You no longer have to be bound by the sin that entangled you once before. Like me, you can now stand against those forces, those addictions, those things in your life that have held you back.

The first step is believing the next step is being a follower: here is a recap of week two in the “Not a Fan” series in case you missed it.

Read Jesus’ words in Luke 9:23-25

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

We have to move now. We have to die. We all know that believing in Christ means that when we die we will go to Heaven but I need you to know now. It is time to die now.

Paul says this in Ephesians 2:1-5 NIV

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Notice how Paul is referring to us. It is all in past tense. We, 1) were dead 2) used to live 3) lived among them 4) we were deserving wrath and again 5) were dead. When you accepted Christ into your life you did gain eternal life, it is nothing that you had to earn. Salvation is a gift from God. It is free. All we have to do is accept it. The problem is that we have forces working against us who want us to not claim our new life in our newly found freedom. You must work in your faith and in your salvation daily. Christ says we have to take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23 NIV). This isn’t a one and done decision folks. Here are a few words from James.

James 1:22 NIV - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

James 2:26 NIV - As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Whoever you were before Christ, how you viewed the world, how you lived in the world should now be changing as you accept Christ more and more into your life. The old ways should be replaced by the new ways. We were once slaves to sins (and death and destruction) but now, through our own choice, we have become salves to Christ (life and healing). This is a good trade.

But here is the thing, your path, your journey, will progress only as far as you let it. Jesus wants you to follow him but He won’t make you do it. Jesus wants to change you from the inside out but He wants you to be involved and do the heavy lifting.

In week two Kyle talked about two Greek words, Greek being one of the original languages which the Bible was written. Those two words are:

kurios: lord, master
Original Word: κύριος, ου, ὁ
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: kurios
Phonetic Spelling: (koo'-ree-os)
Short Definition: lord, Lord, master, sir
Definition: lord, master, sir; the Lord.

doulos: a slave
Original Word: δοῦλος, ου, ὁ
Part of Speech: Adjective; Noun, Feminine; Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: doulos
Phonetic Spelling: (doo'-los)
Short Definition: a male slave
Definition: (a) (as adj.) enslaved, (b) (as noun) a (male) slave.

Jesus wants us to be all in. He wants us to give up everything we used to believe in and be a committed follower of Him. There are examples of those who didn’t decide to follow. We have talked about them in previous occasions. What I think is important here is this:

You cannot refer to Jesus as Lord without inferring that you are His Slave. In the our bible’s when it talks about  Lords and Servants they are translating them from the two words above. Kurios and Duolos.

It is just like a child. When a little boy or little girl calls out to her Father she/he is then also making claim that they are the child of that person. This is the same when we call Jesus Lord.

The only question……do you really live that in your life? Are you willing to start now? When you submit to my master, your burden will light, your wounds will be healed, and you will then be offered into a family as His son or daughter. My master loves you. He wants to heal you and make you whole again.

Are there things in your past that you simply have not given up on that you should have? For me it was smoking. I struggle with it. Yes, at times I do fail. However, with Christ’s guidance I will one day be free from that addiction. Nevertheless, I had to invite Him into that area in order to gain healing. He had to be invited. What areas in your life are you keeping Him out of?

Let my Father be your Father and together we will call Him Abba!

Not a Fan Week 1 - The DTR

This week we started the Not a Fan a fan DVD series and were introduced to the concept of the DTR. If you missed last week, you can watch a 10-minute synopsis by Kyle Idleman on You Tube by clicking the following link.

This week’s series focused on defining the relationship you have with Christ. The discussion after the group was magnificent and many people felt the prompting to share their thoughts and ideas. One common theme developed and is the focus of this week’s Deep in the Week.

Back to Basics.

The sum of the study had us looking at our relationship with Christ. What does your look like? Have you thought about it much? If you had to sit down right now, face to face with Jesus what would you have to say? Would you have to get him caught up on what has been happening in your life because you haven’t talked to him in awhile?

Is your relationship with him just casual or are you committed? Do you just believe in Jesus or do you follow him? Does He come to work with you at all? What about Friday night?

Many people, I’m sure, have made that decision to believe in Jesus, just as Kyle Idleman says. They believe the truth about Jesus but that is all. They go through the motions of being church people. They maybe have the Real Life Church sticker on their car, they wear the T-Shirts and listen to Christian music. They look good going down the road jamming to out Jesus music and they have that fish on the bumper.

Of course, I am not suggesting that those are bad things, but when you truly think about it, how does any of that improve your relationship with Jesus? Isn’t that just a “no strings attached” relationship?

Maybe you have never considered that you needed a relationship with Jesus and have a hard time grasping what that looks like. I know I did. I’m a word person. When we start talking about specifics that I am unsure of I want to know specifically what it is we are talking about. I looked up the word “relationship” in Webster’s dictionary and here is what I found:

1: the state of being related or interrelated
2: the relation connecting or binding participants in a relationship: as
A)      kinship
B)       a specific instance or type of kinship
3: A) a state of affairs existing between those having relations or dealings
    B) a romantic or passionate attachment

Now think about your closest friend. Maybe it is a current friend or an old one you had years ago. Maybe it is your spouse, grandparents, parents, or children. Who are you closest to?

In that relationship I am confident that one of the things that helped that become what it was had to do with one thing: communication. You talked right? Like all the time? When you did talk you were intimate. You opened up and shared intimate personal details about your life with each other. The two of you shared it all through the struggles and celebrated good times.

I have a core group of friends and family with whom I owe a lot for being there for me through my divorce. It is not a lot of people, maybe 4 or 5 at the most. They were helpful to me because we talked. They were invaluable. Of those 5 I had a triangle of strength from 3 of them. We spent countless hours either on the phone or in person in conversation and no boundaries were off limits. Yes, sometimes I heard things I didn’t like and there were truths revealed that I needed to hear. In the end, these folks are my closest friends and I would not have those close personal friends if hadn't talked with them daily. Honestly, God knows where I would be today if they had not been there for me.

Do you know it is no different with Jesus? That is what He wants with you. He wants to be intimate with you. He wants to hear from you. Just talk to Him. Pastor Jared echoed that this weekend didn’t he? His message this weekend convicted me and laid down the facts for me consider. Did it do anything to you?

He taught from Matthew 7:13-14 NIV

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Jared also laid down some bold statements to wake us up.
"Some of us are going to hell"………..ouch.

Really? Yeah, he said that if I am not following Jesus on the narrow path then I am following Satan on the wide road that leads to destruction.

Hard but true. Offensive but true. This is so true friends. If you don’t believe Pastor Jared or maybe you thought he was being a bit harsh then you need to consider these words from Christ, spoken later in Matthew. Perhaps Christ's words can clear this truth up for you.

Matthew 12:30 NIV
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters."

There are only two roads. Which one are you on?
Jesus wants us to talk to him. He wants us to be with Him. He loves you and LONGS for relationship with you. He doesn’t want weekly visits. He wants to be first on your list.

Getting back to basics means, we have to pray. We have to talk with Jesus daily; just as you would with your best friend or your spouse.  So pray to God and pray to His son.

You do not need any special requirements. No degrees to earn, no pledges to take and no permission form anyone.

Jesus is patiently waiting for you too just start talking and He will never want to hear you shut up either. Don’t be on the wrong road. Get talking. Get praying. "Prayer is a love language between you and God". Pastor Jared said that. He was so right.

If you are still not sure about prayer, please reach out to us. We would love to help you in this area.

OK, so we have covered talking to to God through prayer. But if we want true communication then we need to recognize that it is not just a one way street.

We need to also listen to God.  Not only listen, but to be a follower we must also act on what He says.

James 1:22 - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

There are so many distractions in today’s world. There are so many things fighting for our attention that we must be careful. Consider all the marketing that you get bombarded with today. Everyone wants your attention, this world has created so many ways to get it to: radio, internet, TV, billboards, movies etc...Consider this quote posted in an article I found on CBSNews.com.

"Well, it's a non-stop blitz of advertising messages," President of the Marketing Firm Yankelovich, Jay Walker-Smith said. "Everywhere we turn we're saturated with advertising messages trying to get our attention." Walker-Smith says we've gone from being exposed to about 500 ads a day back in the 1970's to as many as 5,000 a day today.

Whoa, 5,000 advertising messages a day. Folks, we must be intentional about listening to God. We must find time to be still and allow Him the chance to speak to us. We can not afford not to.  What road to you want to be on?

Listening for God can be one of my biggest challenges. I'm just being open and honest about that. It isn't always easy to hear. Sometimes I get it and sometimes it is completely lost on me. There are times where I wish He would just send me a certified letter! Ha, I keep checking my mailbox and so far nothing.

But I don’t lose heart. This doesn’t mean God is not talking with me. I think he talks to us in many different ways. Sometimes he comes to us in a small still voice or the Holy Spirit prompts us in directions we should go in our lives. He is always trying to get our attention. Don't you think He knows what He is up against? 5,000 advertising messages a day. That is a lot of static.

One thing is certain though, he knew we would be distracted so he wrote down what we need to know. The Bible is the primary place to hear God’s will for our lives. When we take time each day to read the bible and pray we increase the opportunities to hear from God.

Being fully committed to Christ means that we will have to sacrifice and the first thing you should consider sacrificing is some of your time for Jesus. Spend time with Him each day.

If you want to learn more about daily devotions, or if you need to talk with someone please contact us. We would be happy to meet and discuss ways you can begin improving your relationship today.

Your thoughts and comments are welcomed an can be posted below.

Not a Fan

This week we embark on a new video series by Kyle Idleman. Not a Fan. I must admit. I am excited but at the same time, I also have to admit that I am a little scared of what will be asked of me. Kyle presented us with some serious questions about our faith. Here are some of the key questions that have stuck with me after seeing the video.

      1)      Do I just ADMIRE Jesus or am I DEVOTED to him?
      2)      Has following Jesus cost me anything? Anything at all?
      3)      How serious do I take my faith?

We all know John 3:16, it written down and displayed on banners at football games and other sporting events. Athletes even where it under their eyes in that black goo that is supposed to reduce glare.

No one, however promotes this verse, as stated by Christ in Luke 9:23:

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Look at whom Christ was talking to in this verse. Was he talking to church leaders like pastors or others in ministry?

No.

Was he talking to just the religious elite or those who already were following Him?

Nope.

It reads “he said to them ALL” and when he spoke he addressed what he said to WHOEVER. That’s pretty much everyone right. He says it to you. He says it to me.

Try it this way. “Steve (insert your name), if you want to be my disciple you must deny yourself (what you think you want in life, what you think you need in life) and take up your cross daily and follow me.

Whoa, really? This won’t be about me anymore. Uh oh. He is talking about making a huge commitment now. This is serious stuff; Jesus doesn’t want just a part of me. He doesn’t just want my time on Sunday or one night a week. He wants all of me, all of the time. No if ands or buts. All of me.

Yes He does.

Before we get too down and discouraged I do want to let you in on a secret. We may think that by giving everything we are to Jesus means that we won’t fulfill our own desires or have an opportunity to find any fulfillment in our life. That simply isn’t true. Do you know who gave you your desires? God did and He knows what you need and He has promised that He has great plans for us and our future (Jer 29:11). What some Christians may think, is that if they fully commit to Christ they will end up serving somewhere where they will be unfulfilled and empty. Many people I’ve talked with over the years all seem to share an inner fear that, if they committed to Jesus, they would end up in a mud hut, somewhere in the plains of Africa. While that is possible, some of us are called to be missionaries, it is not a legitimate fear!

I don’t know what you will find specifically. We are all called to different tasks. What I can say though, with confidence, is that you will find everything you have been looking for and more when you seek Him with all your heart. You will end up serving in an area that you are passionate about and you will find your life is very much worth living.

Don’t be mistaken. I don’t’ want to be guilty of sugar coating or of selling you Jesus as discussed in the video so don’t let me mislead you. Being truly committed to Christ does come with a cost and there will be sacrifice on your part. It is inevitable. Consider this CS Lewis quote:

“I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.”

He knew what following Christ looked like. He got it. He still chose Christianity.
No, it will not be easy, but friends, it will be oh so rewarding. Take a good look at yourself and ask yourself these same questions:

      1)      Do YOU just ADMIRE Jesus or are YOU DEVOTED to him?
      2)      Has following Jesus cost YOU anything? Anything at all?
      3)      How serious do YOU take your faith?

I look back on my life and I do see that I admired Jesus. I was not devoted to Him. He was something I chose so my life would be better. I wanted to have a successful life so allowing Christ in my life should of helped me in my marriage and as a father. He was what married people did right? Unfortunately I held onto many different areas of my life for years while I was Christian (money, smoking, anger, for example) and didn’t give him full access. I didn’t want him to interfere and I didn’t want to stop doing it my way.

Yeah, I went to church, yeah I was in a small group, but I didn’t get it. I was a fan.

Truth be told…. it was nearly 12 years after I first gave my life to Christ that I realized I was trying to do it my way and I was no good at it. It was February 11th, 2009 at 11:00 AM when I realized that, despite my best efforts to be a "good" Christian I was failing at it. I was failing at it because I had not yielded full control over to Jesus. It was then that I had accepted the fact that I was a sinner and I needed Him to take over my life. My marriage had fallen a part and I was not a very good father. I could no longer survive on my own and needed to know His way.

Looking back over the past four years, I can honestly say that following Christ has cost me dearly. All of which I can't get into now but it has. Sometimes I am amazed at how I have even survived the pain and agony I have endured since that day. However, I have survived and I am a better man because of it. God's grace was sufficient.

Reading this book and watching the movie has been very enlightening to me. It has really shown me how we must be moving in order to DO ANYTHING FOR CHRIST. We must be willing to walk away from wherever we are in life if we want to follow Him. I hope that this DVD study has you thinking; to be honest you would have to be near unconscious to avoid any impact from this video. It is powerful.

Thoughts are a good start but that, for us friends, just isn’t going to be enough. We can’t touch and move people for God by simply thinking about this video.

It takes movement. It takes action. Faith is a verb.

We do not believe in a God that is just “good enough” do we? No! We believe in a God that is Mighty to Save and He is calling YOU into action.

How will you respond to His calling?

Opportunities:

Real Life Church is always looking for those who want to serve. Here are a few things happening soon that we need your help with:

1)      We are currently leading the Healthy Kids Day held at the YMCA on April 27th. We need volunteers to come love on the kids on our community. You can help run some of the game or supervise a bouncy house. We even need people to paint the kids faces. Contact us for more information.

2)      Cookie Drops: If you have been around us at all, you know we love COOKIES! We have been making cookies and delivering them all over to the community spreading the love of Christ to those in need. If you like to bake cookies and talk with people then this is for you. You don’t need a degree or even to know how to bake; you just need a willingness to show up, give someone free cookies, and say hi. Spend a few minutes talking with them and listening to them .They just need to know you care.

3)      Dinner Drops – do you know someone who could use a day off cooking or someone who would benefit from having a meal delivered to their house? We are currently exploring options to reach people in need one plate at a time. Let us know your thoughts and ideas; this could be a great way to make a difference in our community.

4)      How about our Real Life kids? Did you know that some weekends we have more kids on the campus than we have adults? We have dedicated people who volunteer their time leading these kids but we need more leaders to share in their education! If you feel you can help please let us know as we are always looking to expand our leadership base.

The community in general is in need.

You can explore other options for volunteering on the following site. Volunteer Southwest Michigan. Volunteering Made Easy.
